HODGEPODGE WEDNESDAY

It's Wednesday (already!) and time for Hodgepodge.  Click HERE to join the others.

1.  February 22 is National be Humble Day...What makes you proud?  What keeps you humble?  Well I will admit I have never heard of be humble day, but it does seem like a good idea.  This is a subject that believe it or not I have given LOTS of thought to.  I think because there is such a difference of thought when it comes to pride and how it seems to be stressed so in our society, and how that goes against what the Lord teaches us in the Bible.  God hates pride.  It is one sin He is very clear about.

Proverbs 11:2  When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the humble is wisdom.

Proverbs 29:23  A man's pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor.

Proverbs 16:18   Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

1 John 2:16  For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but it of the world.

James 4:6  But He gives more grace.  Therefore He says: "God resists the proud, but He gives grace to the humble.

I could go on but I will stop as I know this is not really the question here, haha.  I just have thought about how the world teaches you to teach your kids to have "pride" in themselves etc.  I think it can easily be mixed up with self confidence which then can quickly be turned into pride.  But I am getting off track again.  Bottom line, I have been proud of my kids many, many different times in their lives for the choices they've made and the things they have accomplished.  But at the same time, there has been a few times as well that they have kept me very humble, haha.

2.  Where is the catch-all (aka dumping ground) in your house?  Unfortunately we have a couple.  One of them is the kitchen counter, and the other is the desk.  It's just the quickest easiest place to dump almost anything as you come into the house.  We also have tossed a lot of "stuff" into the shed.  It used to be our
garage.  Anything I couldn't figure out what to do with I'd toss out there.

3.  Do you make it a point to visit State/National Parks when you travel or in your own hometown?  What is your favorite?  I guess that not only don't we make it a point or priority, I don't really have a favorite either.  Seems like I should huh?

4.  How would you define honor?  I guess there would be a few ways to describe honor in my opinion, and it would depend upon how you were thinking about it.  I always think about honor as being a special privilege.  A special recognition of some kind.  For instance to graduate from school with "honors" meaning you went beyond and above what you needed to.  Or a "maid of honor" meaning your most treasured and well thought of friend who can always count on to be there for you; "honored" above all your other friends.  But I also think about honor as someone who you respect who does the right thing even when no one is watching,

5.  Angel's food or Devil's food - which cake do you prefer?  This is a tough one because depending on my mood, I love them both.  But....I think I would go with Devil's food.  Chocolate is just plain old hard to beat.

6.  What's the most recent road trip you have taken?  Where did you go and how many hours did you spend in the car?  Do you like to zoom to your destination or leisurely wind your way there with stops along the way?  What is your car snack of choice?  Ok, well my most recent road trip was in September.  We went to my daughter's house in east New Mexico (right almost on the boarder of Texas) when she was having her baby.  It took us around 15 hours.  That particular trip the car couldn't go fast enough to suit me.  I guess as a general rule I want to GET to where ever it is we are going.  I am not much for side trips along the way.  Though you don't have to persuade me much to stop for food.  : )  My snack of choice is probably trail mix.  For some reason though whenever I am on the road, all good eating habits seem to fall by the way side and I am sort of on a free for all.  Candy bars, chips,  ice cream and cookies (don't panic if you are reading this Mel, dad does try to restrain me).

HERE'S WHO IS WAITING FOR ME AT THE END OF THOSE ROAD TRIPS!

7.  Recent headlines told how a preschool child in NC had their packed lunch from home taken away and a school lunch substituted by a school inspector who deemed the homemade lunch unhealthy.  Reportedly the parent was then charged for the school lunch (chicken nugget meal) although an update to the story says the parent was not billed.  The inspector was conducting a routine inspection of the classroom - he/she was not there solely to peek in the lunch boxes.  The packed lunch contained a turkey and cheese sandwich, an apple juice box, a bag of chips, and a banana.  You can read the story HERE.  Your thoughts?  WOW....I guess again I have some mixed thoughts on this and would have to give it a lot more thought before I formed any opinions.  But off the top of my head....I find this VERY disturbing.  How is it that they know what else the child may or may not be eating for breakfast, dinner or snack time that would fill in the requirements for what is necessary for a "good" diet.  Plus, if they can't really make the kid eat it anyway, what is the point?  Just so it is offered I guess?  I first started working at the school I worked at for years when Melody was in KG and it was an all day KG and she ate her lunch there and her lunch aids were MAKING her eat EVERY little thing I put in her lunch.  It got so I was counting the grapes or the carrot sticks I put in her lunch so that there wouldn't be too many.  I was going to go and work there for a few days just to get the feel of what was going on and ending up working there for 6 years.  Sooo now having told you that.  Mel's lunches were healthy and never an issue.  She was just soo afraid she might upset someone she was over sensitive.  However, some of those kids I watched over the years ate such UNHEALTHY  meals that I was truly horrified.  I will never forget the little girl who ate SUGAR sandwiches.  And I mean, bread, butter and lots and lots of sugar.  Some kids NEVER had fruit or veggies of any kind.  Most of them however (if not watched closely) would only eat their twinkies or cupcakes or cookies.  It really was bad.  Sooo I guess maybe some kind of monitoring could be good.  But at the same time, I am not sure I think someone TELLING what your kids is going to eat for lunch (or for anything) is the right thing to do either.   This particular story seems just RIDICULOUS though to me.  Her lunch was fine. Come on since when our chicken nuggets healthy?

8.  Insert your own random thought.  I can't quite decide if this "gluten free" diet is helping or not.  I am not going to lie it is somewhat frustrating me.  But I guess I will press on and give it some more time.  How glad I am to KNOW that the Lord knows just what it is that is bothering me here, and He WILL work it all out in His time....it is wrong to hope it is soon?  (smile)  I am finishing up my sewing projects and I am thinking about maybe doing another.  I will take pictures of my finished projects and when my niece has received them I will share them.  Hope you all are having a good week!

  1. Fun post...oh my the lunch thing, well even going deeper is the fact they invaded the parents rights! When government starts to take control over everything we are all in trouble...I mean, they didn't pay for the lunch the wise mother fixed to begin with. Oh my so much government control...okay, political opinion.

Mary...I will email you her blog...she has learned a lot on how to cook to keep things from bothering you while on her quest for health. Her Pinterest is great...I pin a lot of her stuff and I am learning a lot. I will continue to pray for you.

Have an awesome week...loved each answer and could comment on all...but then I would be writing a book.

  3. I'd be in a hurry, too, to get your destination considering what was waiting for you there! ;-)

I'm not normally a big chocolate fan, but that cake sure looks good!

  4. Wow, so many good things, I like your take on being humble and pride. I have thought about it so much too.
I read about that school lunch thing and I just shook my head and wondered what the heck a government official was looking at school lunches for anyway. Too much government.
You are having trouble with your Gluten free things? I am so sorry.
I guess it was hard at first trying to find things to eat. We used lots of nuts and cheese I Think, and fruit. My husband still eats that way every day. When he eats anything with wheat he gets cold sores. Isn't that weird. We couldn't figure out what was causing them until he became gluten free.
Okay, I loved this and that picture of the cake is to die for.
    I just had breakfast. :)
    Have a lovely day today.

  6. Enjoyed this, Debbie. I read about the school lunch police. Makes you wonder what's going to happen next. I love little Sam and feel like I know him! Such a darling. The picture of the cake looks yummy. I'm convinced there's a way to make nearly any food more healthy. The recipe for chocolate cake found on the tin of Hershey's cocoa is a good one. I never use the amount of sugar any recipe calls for and that helps.
    Blessings~

  7. I think we all got on our soapbox on #7. Interesting question for sure!

Yes, I'm all about the destination too when we are traveling. Riding in a car is NOT one of my favorite things to do. But, these Grans do make it more doable.

Happy rest of the week to you!

  9. Sugar sandwiches? I use to love mustard sandwiches when I was a little girl and would beg my mother to please make them for me for lunch but she wouldn't! She said someone would think we didn't have enough money for lunch meat. Hope you're having a nice day. Love to stop and get snacks when we have long road trips also. That's part of the fun! Thanks for your email!

  11. Great post! I love your Hodgepodge days! Did I spell that right? First of all I loved your answers to the humble question and also about the honor question. I completely agree.

Wow, have not heard about the lunch thing until this. Didn't read the story, but I think it's a little overboard. Plus the child's lunch didn't sound unhealthy at all. I mean maybe the chips? But come on, that's a little crazy if you ask me. I give Riley almost the same thing for lunch everyday. A turkey and cheese sandwich, a few chips or crackers, a piece of fruit, a gogurt and a juice box. Hmmmmm.....never remember hearing anywhere that chicken nuggets are healthier than a turkey and cheese sandwich. But what do I know?? :)

Great post, I always enjoy visiting your blog!

  12. Oh and one more thing, I just read Janette's comment on the lunch thing, and I completely agree!!!

  13. I love the Hodge Podge posts. I don't know if I've ever told you that.

I liked what you said about teaching kids to have pride in themselves turning into teaching them to be prideful. That's so true and IMO such a problem today. My pastor says that he didn't say "I'm proud of you" to his children. He said, "I'm well pleased". I liked that and have adopted it.

And about the school lunch? My first thought was YIKES what big snoops they are. I will refrain from saying much more because I'm so radical that I actually don't believe in school lunch at all and think all lunches ought to come from home. Yeah, I know... crazy Debbie and her notions.

I hope that you do find out what is ailing you and can fix it soon. I well remember the days before my fibro diagnosis when I thought I would go mad with the wondering.

  14. The lunch thing reminds me of the push to have parents deemed "irresponsible" or "negligent" for letting their kids eat at McDonalds. I'm all for healthy eating but not with government or school intervention like that. If I want to kill myself with chocolate and pizza, it should be my choice, not the government's! lol

As for the humble theme, it's something I try to stay aware of daily but my personality likes to be right so I do have to reign it in and not be prideful in it.
