CHRISTMAS NO MATTER WHAT!

Unto to you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord!

Well, so far not one thing has turned out the way I thought it might, planned for weeks it would, or pictured in my mind...

It started with a call from Melody on Friday afternoon telling me that both she and Sam were sick with a horrible throat, cough thing and since the baby was wheezing and running a temperature she was taking him to the docs to be seen.  Good thing she did too because it turned out he had two ear infections and a mild case of RSV.  They were not coming.  I swallowed my disappointment over this (not as gracefully as I would have liked to btw) and told myself, "Such is life, and it IS that time of year."  Catching everything as quickly as they did, so far Sam is responding VERY WELL to his medication, and it doing lots better.  Meanwhile though Melody has gone down hard with it.  : (  God willing they will come on the 30th instead and stay until the 6th.  Moving on with our plans then to of course have all of our boys and their families for Christmas Day, hubby and I went shopping for the food.  We bought a HUGE amount (don't know why some sort of a fever always comes over us in the grocery store in preparation for such an event!) and got it home and put it away.  Then the next call came in.  My youngest son's family had the stomach flu making a stop at their house.  They were not coming either...sigh.   I quickly changed plans again.  We would load up the food and go to my oldest son's house for the day as it is really so much easier for them for us to go there instead of their coming to our house.  But then! a much larger call came from my sister yesterday morning.  Mom had a seizure and had fallen in their kitchen and appeared to be hurt badly and was on the way to the hospital.  Hubby and I scurried out the door and I spent the entire day by her side at the hospital.  It was horrible.  She was in soo much pain, seemed completely out of it, and thrashed about in her bed while we waited for test results.   And as it turns out she has a small fracture in her neck.  She is in intensive care and we are waiting an assessment from the neurosurgeon as to rather or not it will require surgery.  Poor mom.  They were keeping her pretty sedated after that so she was at least blissfully sleeping.  Since everyone but me had plans for Christmas Eve I stayed at the hospital as long as I could last night, and we have divided today into shifts.   I have NO IDEA what this day might hold.  Will she have surgery?  Be moved out of intensive care? Be in a great deal of pain if she is awake?  Be able to solve the whole thing with just a neck brace?  Who knows....Meanwhile of course I have questioned the why as to why we messed with her medication in the first place when she was doing so well, but have decided there is no point in that.   What's done is done.  And! Now a call has come from my oldest son house and their youngest is coming down with the throat/barky cough thing!  It could almost be funny now.  Our final plan (for now of course) is IF mom does not have to have surgery, and IF no one else gets sick, the rest of my son's family will come over to Grandma's and Grandpa's for a while this afternoon after this Grandma gets back from her turn at mom's bedside.  Sooo, how is that?  I can honestly hardly believe all that has happened.   My latest plan (and I will be VERY careful to say God willing!) our family gather all together next Tues. on New Years, and celebrate.  And hopefully my mom will be well on the mend, and able to join us as well.

One thing I have sure have had hammered in my head this Christmas is that Christmas is REALLY not about the presents, the food, or even the gathering of family.  It is all about Jesus who was born to save this hurt and needy world from their sins.  It comes no matter what.  So wishing you all a very Merry Christmas this morning!

  3. Like most years, I've had to put a few of my expectations/plans on hold to cater to the masses. I'm sorry for the multiple health issues pertaining to your family that have prevented your celebration today; may the present of God's presence be close to you as you reflect, remember, and rest in the beauty of each moment that is left.

    Love you, sister.

  5. Sounds like "if it could go wrong, it did go wrong." My goodness, Ia m so sorry about all of this. Life is so full of unexpected happenings and don't know how we'd ever make it without that little baby born in a manager.

May the Lord give you peace in this time of upheavel.

  6. Oh my, Debbie. Everything all at once. We had such a Christmas a few years ago and it was not pleasant, but did remind us that it was for these very things that the Lord came. (I couldn't ditch that red bear that they gave to us on Christmas Day at the hospital fast enough. It was such a vivid reminder of a truly rotten day.) Christmas comes when you need it and I know that you will need it on New Year's Day. Hope that all that food will carry forward. Praying for all concerned!

  7. It is a rude awakening when things like this happen. But yes, it's not about the presents and preparations but about ...Jesus.

So sorry to hear of all the sickness in the family at this time of year. I know how much you enjoy Melody's visits with Sam. But it is best to take care of themselves and get better. I pray for your mom that all will go well.

    Sending you extra hugs today,
    Debbie
