MY NIGHTGOWN STORY....

Well it is Friday already and time for another post.  I have kept myself ridiculously busy this week which seems like a good idea.  I have made 3 burp cloths (thought I was done with these, but realized I had cut these out but not sewn them together) and 6 little nightshirts.  Now I need to tell you about these nightshirts....I am trying REALLY hard NOT to dwell on this, BUT! I am pretty sure when I was making these up for Sam (for those of you who followed me back then!) I told you about the "night gown" pattern that has basically been in our family for years!  I believe it was originally my grandmothers and so my mother and her sisters wore them, and then all of their kids, then all of us kids (which were made back then by my Aunt Carolyn (mom's sister) and then by some of mine (I guess actually only Sam and now Luke) and my sister Diane's grandkids.  My aunt copied the pattern onto paper and hand wrote out the instructions.  We (my sister Diane and I ~ we're the only ones who sew) kept them in a manila envelope and passed it back and forth when the other wanted/needed it.  Now it would have made PERFECT sense to copy the pattern (and simple too!) but for whatever reason we never did.  Bottom line?  I am pretty sure (as is Di) that it was last in MY possession, and I CAN NOT find it anywhere.  I used to keep all of my sewing things in what used to be our spare bedroom, but what became mom's bedroom this last year.  I of course moved all of my boxes, bags, containers, drawers etc., out of that room and ruthlessly got rid of some of it, stored some of it in containers in our storage shed and re-organized what I use constantly into my sewing cabinet and little plastic drawers (I am sure this is a riveting story, haha) I vaguely remember seeing the envelope and thinking to myself "put this somewhere VERY specific and careful" as I wouldn't want to lose it.  And now who knows what that place is?  I have checked and re-checked every place I can possibly think of, and it just isn't here.  In my desperation I  alerted told Diane hoping my memory had failed me and she might have the envelope...but no, she was SURE I had it last...sigh.  I HATE things like this.  I know I wouldn't have tossed it in my ruthless attempt to make more room, but who knows?  Where else can it be?  I have dug the boxes out of the shed TWICE and gone through them, and not there.  I even had my hubby completely take apart my sewing cabinet (it is pretty big with drawers etc.) in case it might have slipped down behind the drawers or something.  It is gone....For some reason it is REALLY bothering me.  All these women in the past managed to keep track of it, but I have LOST it.  And! I really needed it to finish up my sewing for the coming baby! Sooo I just kind of made up my own.  I semi used a shirt pattern I had but changed soo many things about it I wonder now why I started with it.  I also decided to use snaps instead of buttons as Melody had recently told me she really felt it would make them easier to use and change in the middle of the night, haha.  So all of this to tell you I have made up 6 night shirts (and these look more like little nightshirts than nightgowns) this week.  The neck is a little bigger than I think it should be, the sleeve is shorter, the gown itself is less flared, and yet it really looks VERY similar to the others.  I guess I could have taken apart a finished one to use as a pattern guide, but the only one I had was one Diane had made for her latest grandson, and she had crocheted around the neck and sleeves and front of the gown and there was no way I was going to ruin it, not to mention the fact it still wouldn't be exact anyway, and not to mention the fact she would then REALLY have to strangle me.  I did use it for a guide for my made up one by measuring lengths and widths though etc.  Soo that is my nightgown story.  Sad, but true.  Maybe it will eventually show up and in the meantime I actually think "my" gown is just as good (maybe even better) and it is the old it is what it is.

I HAVE SHOWN THEM WITH THE BLANKETS THAT GO WITH THEM (THOUGH SOME ARE INTERCHANGEABLE) THIS IS THE QUILTED ONE I MADE UP.  SOME OF THE SHIRTS/GOWNS HAVE SHORT SLEEVES, SOME I MADE A LITTLE LONGER.  THIS IS THE SHORT SLEEVED ONE

THIS IS SUCH A SOFT CREAMY YELLOW AND I LOVE IT.  IT IS SPORTING THE LONG SLEEVES.  IT CAN ACTUALLY GO WITH A COUPLE OF THE OTHER BLANKETS TOO

THIS IS A SOFT SMALL YELLOW AND WHITE STRIPED WITH SHORT SLEEVES.  THE YELLOW AND WHITE STRIPES ARE IN THE INSIDE OF THIS BLANKET IN CASE YOU CAN'T SEE IT

A VERY SOFT BLUE.  ALSO GOES WITH OTHER BLANKETS...

A CLOSE UP LOOK AT THE SNAPS.  THE SNAPS BTW COST MUCH MORE THAN THE SHIRT, HAHA, GOOD THING I HAD A 50% OFF COUPON!

I have also made a soft green, and a soft gold but for some reason have never taken pictures of them.  I will try to do it later.  Maybe I have a couple more receiving blankets I am going to make which is definitely WAY over kill, but I LOVE the fabric, already have it, and so why not?  And then hopefully next week I will make the rag quilt.  Larissa's family is having a baby shower for her on the 7th of July so it is my goal to have it all ready by then.  Tomorrow my sisters and I are going to begin the sorting through of mom's things from the sister's house where she lived on the week-ends.  Eventually we will get to her things here.  We have already done a GREAT deal of this when we moved mom into with us, but it is amazing how much is still left.  Other than that I am looking forward to the week-end as always.  My sons are coming (without their kids) to spend the day with hubby on Sat.  They are going to do "guy" things and everyone of them is looking forward to it.  Hope you all have a GREAT week-end, and enjoy your time celebrating Father's Day with your families.  Blessings to you all!  Debbie

  1. Oh, don't you just hate to hide things from yourself, knowing that where you hid/stored them was at the time, the exact place you thought it would be easy to retrieve? Yes, that spot made the most sense and was so logical! Then, all of a sudden not only the item(s) but the whole hiding spot has completely removed itself from your home. Good luck finding your pattern, but your new creations are adorable.

  2. Ack! I hate, hate, hate when I put something away safe, and then can't find where I put it. Praying that you will find the pattern ... if only for sentimental reasons. ;-)

Thanks for the show of all the baby stuff you made ... it's all just too, too adorable!

  3. Oh I am so sure you will find it. I things those gowns are just perfect.
Do you have any gowns left from the other gowns that you could take apart and make a pattern from the pieces?
Have a wonderful weekend. I bet it is there in the house somewhere. I know what you mean though that would get to me so bad.

  6. Everything you make is so pretty, Debbie. You are one talented lady! Just the other day I put something away to keep it from sweet Shaun until I was ready for him to have it. I still haven't found it.

  7. I have lost a number of these sorts of things that others have managed to hold onto for a long time. Hope that you find your pattern, though. What you've done from memory is wonderful. Hope that Father's Day has been wonderful for all the dads in your family.

  8. Oh I wished I lived near you so I could be motivated to sew for my two upcoming grand babies. These are just so precious and so remind me of what my mom did for me. You do sooooooooo much.
Blessings through your journey and through managing your mother's things.
    Hugs!! Enjoy those babies.
