OUR WEEK-END WITH JD

JD
Another busy week-end is behind us and even busier week lies ahead.  How grateful I am for busy days, and summertime memories.  This is the last week before school for all of my grands so I am trying to make it count.  I still have a few more "one on ones" to do.  JD's week-end was just about as much fun as an almost 8 year old boy can hope for I suspect, lol.  He arrived at bedtime Friday night as his family had spent the day at the beach with friends, so he went straight to bed even though the excitement was practically shooting out his ears, lol.  He was up EARLY, lol, and the busy, busy day began.  He had decided on donuts and orange juice for breakfast, so that was quick and easy.  And good thing too as he was ready to go about 15 minutes later with his teeth properly brushed, lol.  After pointing out it was only 7:30, he sat down and played with grandpa's football game on his i-pad to help pass the time.  This boy has got football in his blood, (thanks to grandpa!) and pretty much anything having to do with the sport catches his interest.  He is unusually big for his age, (the size and height of most 10 year olds) and a passion for the game that is either there or it isn't.  I don't believe it is something you can MAKE anyone enjoy or want to do.   It just has to be there, do you know what I mean?  Anyway, he enjoyed himself with that while grandpa and grandma got themselves ready and did up the dishes.  By 9:30 we were heading to Target to try and find a Lego set (one of the smaller less expensive ones!  goodness Lego's are expensive!) that he has been wanting forever he claimed, lol.  Well, Target didn't have it so after getting a few necessities we needed we headed to the Mall for a little back to school shopping with promises that we would hit Toys R Us later in the day. Now I don't have to tell any of you that NO 7 year old boy WANTS to school clothes shop, but he really did very well, and showed amazing patience with the whole process.  Grandpa and I had decided a while back that we would help out with back to school clothes for as many grandkids as we can for as long as we are able.  I remember the days well when I was living them myself, and know how hard it can be to get done sometimes, so we do what we can.  JCPenny's was having a wonderful sale and we got a couple of outfits for him and for Jeffie and Cody while we were at it.  I let JD pick out the shirts he liked, and then grandma matched shorts to them.  Much easier that way, lol.  We headed to Vans then for some shoes, and we were done!  Now it was time for the real fun to begin.  We drove over to little Jeff's house to pick him up so he could join us for the rest of the day.  Grandpa had decided that an afternoon at Dave and Busters for video games would be about the best thing any little boy could hope for.  I figured he was probably right, but I am NOT going to pretend it would have been my first choice, lol.  They ALL had a ball (grandpa included of course!) and I had fun watching them all enjoy themselves.  We started with lunch and the boys were almost giddy when they realized malts were starting off the meal, haha.  They did have chicken fingers and fries too, which must have been tasty as they made quick work of them even though they had started with those malts. And for the next two hours they went from game to game collecting their tickets to turn in for prizes at the end.  I LOVED the fact that the boys decided right from the beginning they would simply pool their ticket winnings and divide them evenly at the end.  I didn't even suggest it to them, they came up with it on their own.  They were both surprisingly good at the games.  But all good things must eventually come to an end, and they finally headed over to turn in their tickets and collect their "prizes" though boy did that take some deliberation.  Toy's R Us was right across the street so of course we headed over there after we left to get the promised Lego's.  Now Jeffie is as into Lego's as JD is, so of course he picked out a small set too.  At that point the plan was to take Jeffie back home but the boys began to beg for more time so they could put their Lego's together with each oter, so Jeffie joined us for that and for dinner as well.  Grandpa bbq'd hamburgers and they had that and tator tots and watermelon for dinner.  They finished off the night with bowls of their favorite ice cream (JD's...mint chocolate chip, and Jeffie's was chocolate chip cookie dough) and admiring their completed Lego creations.  Jeffie headed home after that and JD played a little more football on the I-pad before tumbling into bed.  Sunday morning it was pancakes and bacon for breakfast, and then we made the drive back down to San Diego for church.  Hubby and I left right after church as we had a few errands to run.  JD has a sweet and tender heart and a fun loving personality to go with it.  He was obedient, kind, respectful, and full of life.  How he reminds me of his daddy.  Grandpa and I were both so grateful for this time with him.  Here are some pictures.  All taken with my phone....sorry.

So now this week I need to fit in a movie date and ice cream with Cody, and a shopping/lunch/movie with Lindsey, and then next week-end with Donatella....whew.  In between all of this I have an appointment to do my hair and nails, and I HOPE to finish up my quilt for the wedding gift.  Think I'll make it?  Enjoy your weeks!  Blessings to you all!  Debbie

  1. Wow! Just as I suspected only better! = D

You know, tomorrow, I'm going to visit with a cousin I haven't seen for over twenty years. I'm very excited about it. Somehow I think these cousins are going to be good friends who won't allow 20 years to slip off.

Yes, you will make it. You're Superwoman!

  2. Oh Debbie, this sounds like such a great time with that special grand boy. We were privileged to see our youngest granddaughter (soon to be 8) baptized in Dallas yesterday and squeeze in a short visit with her big sisters as well. We treasure these brief but welcomed visits as I know you do as well. I hope the rest of your busy week is just as enjoyable. Remember, you can always rest in the nursing home. LOL!

  6. Hi Debbie! I discovered your blog quite by accident and I am SO happy that I did! I really enjoy reading about your busy life, your lovely family and your stitching and quilting adventures! You really are an inspiration to me. It sounds like you are just the sort of grandparents that every child would wish for - fun, generous, kind, caring and of course, their biggest fans! What a beautiful family you have. I always look forward to visiting your blog and whenever I see a new post I am so happy to catch up with what you are doing - and wow, you are one busy lady! As I say, a great inspiration and I do love your latest quilt - the colours are gorgeous. Best wishes to you all! Love Ruby in England xxx PS I know just what you mean about football - my hubby and son are huge fans, daughter and I not so much, no matter how hard we try - football season in England has just started up again, so we have lots of girl time together to look forward to every weekend from now until next May!

  7. What more could an 8-year-old boy ask for? I can't think of a thing! What good times you and your hubby shared with those boys!

(I have to confess that as I was looking at the boys' Lego creations, I was also looking behind them at your new sewing area. You must love it!)

    Enjoy your busy, busy week!

  9. Oh Debbie, what a wonderful, wonderful day you described, and what well grounded and decent little boys they are. I loved the sharing parts of both the tickets and legos best of all.

I want to be in your shoes some day.

  11. Debbie, What great grandparents you are to chip in on school clothes. I well remember how pricey it could be and so thankful my sil would take my girls out to shop. You had a rich and full weekend. I'm hoping you got the book. Our grands started this week, so my days are quiet. We are headed out on a spur of the moment vacation this Thursday-something we've never done before is make last minute reservations and just take off. Such fun ahead. Hope your week is blessed.
    Hugs,
    Noreen

  12. What fun memories you're making! We just celebrated my father in law's 80th, and we all shared some fun memories. It was sweet to hear my girls tell about meaningful, sometimes silly times spent with their grandparents as they were growing up. So special! Hope you get a nap this week : )
