WEEK-END WRAP UP!

It's a little before eight and I decided I am going to do my very best to get this up by eight thirty [this computer won't type eights, lol, and how do you like my parenthesis?] so that I can get busy on my "to do" pile today.  And with this computer it just isn't easy, but here goes.

We had a busy, productive, and ENJOYABLE week-end.  Hope you all did too.  Saturday hubby decided to shampoo all of our carpets.  I think I mentioned sometime or somewhere in one of my blog posts that years and years ago we purchased our own carpet shampooer.  One of our wiser purchases that's for sure as it is easy to use [guess that's easy to say considering I am NOT the one doing it, lol] and does a wonderful, wonderful job!  I do think I have also mentioned somewhere that I am somewhat of a carpet cleaning fanatic.  I like it vacuumed VERY regularly, and shampooed often to keep it as clean as possible, and replaced as soon as it is needed if necessary.  Dirty carpet drives me wild what can I say. Just one of my MANY weird things.  We have cut our carpets down to just the living room/formal dining room area and the bedrooms for just this reason.  Hubby knows me well after 40 years and KNOWS this would save us both lots of headaches, lol.  Anyway, cleaning the carpets was actually hubby's idea which always works well for me as this way I didn't even have to beg, whine, coerce, ask him if he might!  So as he got busy on that, I made a list of little things I have been needing from Joanne's and always seem to forget, grabbed all my coupons and headed to the store.  I quickly got what I needed, but of course I had to look around to make sure I wasn't missing something I couldn't live without.  And that's when I found it!  lol.  Joanne's does NOT usually carry this and I have a feeling it won't last long.  And I had a sixty [won't do sixes either] percent off coupon burning a hole in my purse, lol.  And a good thing as it was kind of pricey.  It was a BEAUTIFUL, thick, SUPER soft, decorator terry cloth in 4 fabulous colors!  I was wanting to make Claire some more burp cloths as we only made six, and it just isn't getting the job done, and terry cloth would make the perfect backing for said burp cloths.  I had some flannel on hand I planned on using, and bought a couple of other small pieces I couldn't resist.  I bought the pretty pink color, though there was a fabulous aqua as well, lol.  I headed home, made us a quick lunch, and then spent the rest of the afternoon at the machine will hubby slaved worked away.  He did our two large area rugs as well and I was almost giddy, lol.  I decided to make these burp cloths a little differently then I usually do.  I decided to finish the edges rather then use the "raggy" look I usually do, as I us make the whole burp cloth with flannel and it looks cute that way I think.  But I didn't think the terry cloth would look as good, and I am super glad I listened to my inner self, lol.  I just cut the fabric to work so that I could get six burp cloths out of the one yard of fabric I bought, so I am not sure what size they actually are, lol. Plenty big enough that's for sure, but cut in a plain rectangles instead of the usual variegated oval shape I usually use.  I also decided they did not need to have the warm and natural batting in the middle for absorbency, as the terry cloth is plenty absorbent enough.  I finished them off with a decorative stitch and just enjoyed the whole process from beginning to end. I do have to tell you too that keeping my old machine was ANOTHER one of my more brilliant ideas. I actually LOVE this machine.  It sews beautifully and once I remembered [and YES it took me a while to remember!] how everything worked on it, it was a great experience.  I intended to put the pictures of these burp cloths in a collage, but couldn't work it for some reason [again this computer!] so they each get their own pic I guess!

SOME OF THE FLANNEL I COULDN'T RESIST.  DON'T YOU JUST LOVE THE PRETTY PINK AND WHITE TERRY CLOTH COLORS?

HAD TO BUY THIS FLANNEL, I LOVED IT FOR SOME REASON

LEFT OVER FLANNEL.  THIS DECORATIVE STITCH WAS ONE OF MY "GO TO" STITCHES BACK IN THE DAY WHEN I SEWED ALL THE TIME FOR MELODY.  I LOVE IT!  AND I HAD JUST THE RIGHT COLOR OF THREAD TO MAKE IT POP.
All in all six new burp cloths cost me around 10 bucks, pretty good I am thinking, especially for the quality of the fabric used.  Then yesterday we went to church at our old church with my oldest son and his family and then over to their house to spend the rest of the day with them for Father's day.  It was just a wonderful, wonderful day in every way!  I am soo glad they have decided to start attending this church and hubby and I have a new plan as a result. We will spend one Sunday at my youngest son's church and then the afternoon with that set of grand kids, and then the following Sunday with my oldest son's family at our old church.  This way we keep caught up with visiting ALL of our California grandkids regularly, and save on driving to San Diego 4 times a month.  We will see how that works.  One of the concerns was for Cody as their Sunday school program is HUGE at this church and he would be in a room with probably around 30 or more kids his age.  Too much confusion can stress him, and we didn't know how he might do.  He did very well in main stream KG last year so long as he wasn't in there for too long of period of times, so we hoped this might work out OK.  It was MORE then OK.  Cody did great!  The teacher said he was obedient to a fault and worked into the program without a single hitch.  We were all very grateful.  After church we went over to their house and while hubby spent time playing basketball with Joe and swimming for a while with both Cody and Jeffie, I sat in their cool living room and spent my time visiting one on one with each one of my grandkids. How I love these kind of conversations as I can really get a feel of what's going on in their lives.   Leah kind of floated around in all areas while cooking the most delicious meal!  My goodness she is a good cook which I think I mention every time we are there, but she just really is!  We feasted [and I do mean feasted!] on her famous barbecued chicken, slow cooked baked beans [which was MY recipe but somehow her's are better!?] and she made me a gluten free pasta salad that was to die for.  I don't think anyone else knew or cared I guess by the gluten free recipe judging by the empty bowl when we were done.  We finished it off with strawberry shortcake [just strawberries and her homemade delicious whip cream for me] and we headed home around 7.  My middle son who usually joins us here was in Arizona spending the week-end with his grandfather which we were all pleased about.  And my youngest son of course is in New Jersey on vacation. Hubby heard from all of his kids and felt very blessed on the day which makes me happy.  I have a lot of pictures that I have to post now as they NEED to be in my journals I print from this blog.  As you know I don't print pictures [unless they are going in a frame on the wall] anymore as there is simply too many of them, but my favorites I put on here so they will be in my books.  I know they are probably overwhelming and possibly even boring to you, so I apologize that my blog posts are usually full of grandkids pictures.  But when you have a dozen as we do, it's a lot of pictures, lol.

I have a lot on my sewing table today to get to so it's time to end this.  Hope you all have a wonderful week, and blessings to you all!

  1. Oh that was so funny...when you have twelve as we do... I will never have more than two, more's the pity! Counting John's, though, I'm pretty close!

The fabrics are beautiful and I know that the burp cloths will come in handy. I always love to see the family times with the city grands. The vacationing NJ contingent look very happy. I can NOT get over the steady gaze that Claire is giving the camera! Darling photo and a proud papa as he has every right to be.

  2. The burp clothes are too cute and all done for a bargin price. Good for you! Hats off to Hubby for taking the lead in cleaning the carpets. We will only have carpet in our guest suite above the garage. The main house will have all wood in the living areas and tile in the baths and storage rooms. I didn't ever want to have to worry about replacing carpet.

You have the cutest Grans and glad you get to see the majority of them regularly. Happy week!
