WEEK-END WRAP UP

OK time for a quick Monday morning week-end wrap up post.  Let me see....going back to last Friday.  My intent had been to get started on my last Advent Calendar, but ended up deciding to put that off for a few days, lol.  I really wanted to mess around some more with my new metallic threads. It is really what I wanted to make the FSL [free standing lace] ornaments with in the first place but my regular shops for buying embroidery threads did not have any, so I had just moved along with regular thread.  Anyway, I just had a feeling that the glittery silver and gold would be just perfect for tree ornaments and I was right.  Between Friday and Sunday afternoon [while hubby watched his beloved football!] I made up a few.  I love them!  However, you do have do turn the speed WAY down when using metallics, and it made them take just forever.  Seriously, the two toned ones with the nativity scene on them took 2 hours and 10 minutes per ornament!  And the thread DID break a few times [VERY common for metallic thread] which required me to re-thread and back up a bit to re-stitch.  This added even more to the time of course.  But they really did come out beautifully.  Let me show you....[I have to mention that as usual the pics do NOT do them justice.  You can't see the glitter and the sparkle which is what makes these ones special and somewhat unique.  I can imagine them on the tree though with the light hitting them just right, and I know they will be really pretty!

YOU CAN KIND OF SEE THE SPARKLE TO THESE, BUT SERIOUSLY THEY LOOK AS IF THEY ARE MADE OF GOLD.  THE STOCKING ONE IS OF THE BACKSIDE SO THAT YOU CAN SEE THEY ARE PRETTY FROM EITHER SIDE REALLY, BUT THE FRONT HAS GOT MORE SPARKLE.  I KNEW I'D NEVER BE ABLE TO TAKE THE FRUSTRATION OF FIRST WINDING THE BOBBIN WITH THIS KIND OF THREAD, LET ALONE WORKING WITH THEM BOTH AFTER IT WAS LOADED, SO I JUST USED A PLAIN WHITE IN THE BOBBIN

THE SILVER IS REALLY VERY PRETTY.  BUT I SEE A COUPLE OF THREADS THAT NEED TO CLIPPED LOOKING AT THIS HERE.  I ALSO MADE THESE ORNAMENTS A LITTLE SMALLER THEN THE OTHERS LIKE THEM AS I THINK THE SMALLER ORNAMENTS LOOK BETTER AT THE TOP OF THE TREE, AND I LIKE THE IDEA OF GLITTER UP THERE

AND HERE IS THE TWO TONED ONE.  I REALLY WISH YOU COULD SEE THIS ONE IN PERSON AS IT IS SIMPLY GORGEOUS, BUT ONLY OK HERE, LOL.  YOU WILL JUST HAVE TO TAKE MY WORD FOR IT.  I MADE TWO OF THESE.

So that about wraps up what's been happening at my sewing machine the last 3 days.  Today I might mess around with these a little more because I don't want to get busy with something else new as I intend to make my little sister's Christmas stockings next.  I had told her a couple of months ago I would when she got a new fireplace and mantle in her home last spring.  We are going to go tomorrow morning so I can help her pick out and get what she wants/needs for me to do this project for her.  I am hoping to get that wrapped up by the end of the week.  Which means it will be NEXT week before I finally start on that final advent calendar.  I am still debating on rather or not I am going to make Christmas pj's for all the grands this year.  It is 12 pairs as you know, and honestly I am not sure I have the time or the means for all of them.  On the other hand I am not sure I can bear not to, lol  We will just have to see

I DO have to share this one last story with you however.  Who knew?  Is what I could title it.  Last Thursday my oldest son's wife Leah got bit on the finger by one of their cats.  I guess the cat had gone somewhat nuts, and had begun viciously attacking one of her own kittens who are already six weeks old and ready to be given away.  Everything happened in the blink of an eye, but I guess in her attempt  to stop the attack and the wildly out of control cat she threw a towel over her and tried to pick her up to get her out of the room.  A HUGE mistake obviously, but in the moment seemed like a good idea.  Anyway, the cat bit her soo hard she had to pry it's mouth off of her finger with the other hand.  She quickly assessed that she didn't need stitches or anything, so she washed it really well and poured some peroxide on it....mistake number 2 and 3.  Later that afternoon after several people had warned her to get it checked, she went to her doctors.  The doctor was instantly concerned saying that cat bites [especially on the finger] were one of the worst you could get as their saliva has soo much bacteria in it that an infection is almost both immediate and certain.  He gave her both a shot and a prescription and told her to come back the next morning.  Oh, and told her that by pouring on peroxide she spread the bacteria through her finger.  By the next morning it was swollen, red and painful and her doctor sent her immediately to a surgeon and a couple hours later she had a surgery to open and drain the wound, and was admitted into the hospital for intravenous antibiotics to be given.  I guess in the finger it is hard for oral antibiotics to get to the infection as it is so small and packed in there or something. Anyway she had to stay in there 24 hours getting the antibiotic, and periodically soaking her finger in something as well.  They cannot stitch the wound shut as it has to heal from the inside out so that the infection can not be shut in.  She was in  a lot of pain, and was also sick from the drugs they had to give her.  All in all a horrifying experience.  Who would have known you would need a surgery and a hospital stay from a relatively small cat bite?  Oh, and they told her lots of people are hospitalized for 2 or 3 days or even more.  So guess she was fortunate hers was WAY better after 24 hours. Good thing she went in when she did or who knows how bad it could have gotten.  But to go from a bite one morning to in the hospital the next day with infection STILL seems pretty unbelievable to me.  Don't think I ever want to be bit by a cat.

I will wrap this up with some cute grandkid pics.  Melody's little family hit a harvest pumpkin patch yesterday afternoon and had some pretty cute taken.  Hope you all have a good week!  Blessings and joy to you all!  Debbie

  4. Your poor daughter-in-law! I'm going to remember that about hydrogen peroxide. My daughter-in-law also had a serious cat bite (my son's whacked cat) and she made the mistake of sealing the wound with that bandage that is like super glue.

Love the ornaments! They sound very labor intensive.

Oh the Pumpkin Patch kids are so cute! Sam sleeping with his pumpkin is just adorable.

  5. Wow, who knew that about cat bites? I sure didn't. I need to let DD know that as they have cats.

Those ornaments ... I thought they were pretty fantastic done with "regular" thread, but with the metallic? They are breath-taking! Wowzers!

Looks like the NM crew had fun at the pumpkin patch.
