HODGEPODGE WEDNESDAY...

Well it's time for the HODGEPODGE again, and once again I find myself a little bit behind.  Not sure how Wednesday keeps sneaking up on me.  But it worked out alright last week, so I decided to give it a whirl again today and jump on anyway.  Especially when I saw that Joyce has shortened the questions to 6 instead of the usual 8 to give herself more time.  I am honestly not sure how she has managed ALL THESE YEARS to stay on top of this week and after week, but I do know I sure appreciate all the work she puts into these.  Anyway, you can join the others by clicking on the pic below this...

1.  Share a favorite memory of your mother or share a favorite something from your own life as mother.  If your a mother or a stepmom, tell us how your experiences as a mom differences from your own mother's experience.   Oh goodness I have soo many of both my mom or as a mom it will be hard to pick.....I think I will go with one of my mom in her last year on this earth.  She was 80 years old and living with us as she had a stroke and could no longer be alone.  Some of those memories from that last year I find are soo frozen in my memory bank it's incredible, and I am soo grateful now that we had that time together as it was different from the vast majority of the time we had together as mother and daughter because she was soo dependent on me for a change.  But on this particular day she wanted to "get out of the house" and do something and I was dragging my feet as it was not an easy thing to do for me.  She was recovering from a broken neck and was in a brace and needed a walker to get around in and all of it was difficult for me as my own knees kept me from being particularly mobile myself.  But I reluctantly agreed and we loaded up and headed to our local Target.  Big adventure I know, lol.  But she and I had always loved to shop together and they had the electric carts there which gave both of us some quick mobility.  Sooo I got her into the car (no easy feat) loaded up her brace etc. and we were off.  We got into our carts at the store (which I had taught her how to use a few months prior) and we began what was probably our last shopping adventure together.  And everything about it was just plain old fun....She was in a great mood that day and feeling particularly spunky, and quickly pushed the go button for a quick pace and took off and I found myself scurrying to just keep up with her.  We quickly whisked around that store and the laughter began.  At one point I bumped into a stand at the end of an aisle and knocked a few things off in my haste to not let her get away from me.  I debated rather or not I should get off and picked up the few items (it was only a few I promise!) or just continue on after her.  I quickly decided to follow mom (I was afraid I'd lose her and while she had her cell phone with her she never could seem to work the thing right) and that's when I realized she was giggling uncontrollably from her cart and said LOUDLY "I saw that....they are going to get you....QUICKLY get out of this area,"  and she took off as fast as the thing would go almost with her head pealed back as though we were racing from a bank we had just robbed.  I squealed out behind her and the laughter began.  Oh my how we laughed....we got to the other end of the store and laughed until our sides hurt.  We eventually settled down and did a little more serious shopping before we eventually left.  Loading her and our purchases into the car we decided to stop at her favorite restaurant for lunch as well, where she had to be greatly assisted getting in and out of a booth etc., but I remember it as one of the best lunches out we had in quite a while.  When I settled her into her chair later that day for her nap, and she fell asleep almost the moment her head laid back, I looked at her and was SOOO glad I had decided to get out of the house with her and have some fun. Can't tell you how much I miss her.  I think our experiences were similar in many ways.. We were both stay at home moms with lots of kids.  But probably one way mine was different from hers was that my kid were all sooo involved in sports and all that went with that.  Multiple practices, games, lessons, trips, and on and on and on.  My mom never did any of that.  I am sure there are multiple more but this answer is WAY too long as it is...sorry.

2.  In May we celebrate teachers (May 9) and nurses (May 6) both.  Most every family has at least one in the midst, so tell us something (or a few things) you appreciate about the teacher or nurse on your family tree.  Well, believe it or not we have only one actual teacher on our tree and that is my daughter.  She only taught school (2nd grade) for 2 years before she quit to raise her own family, and they are still really young.  She might return to it later after they get older, but it's a "lets see how it goes" for now.  My oldest son is also a karate instructor so he "technically" teaches classes and private lessons every day but Sunday. I LOVE the influence he has had on his students, and the way he builds their self esteem and discipline.  And then my youngest son is a Pastor.  Which means he too "teaches"  every time he steps in front of his church.  I can't tell you how much I appreciate all he does to prepare and the effect he has on me and all those he teaches as well.  That's 3 out of my 4 children who "teach" all of which I am grateful for as it was what I  always wanted to do and never did.

3.  Chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad...which would you go for it all three were on the menu?  On bread or bed of lettuce?  If you answered bread, what kind of bread would make it the perfect sandwich?  On a bed of lettuce it would be chicken salad for sure...but if I went for the sandwich it would be egg, and then on sour dough.

4.  Do you have a desk?  Is it organized?  If so share your secret to keeping it that way.  If you don't have a desk, where in your home do you take care of family paperwork and business?  Where do you normally sit to blog?  Yes, we have a desk, and it's organized only in my dreams.  I am going to blame it on my hubby as we share, and I try not to dwell on it.  I sit normally in my recliner chair with my lap top to blog.

 5.  When I was nine years old...we had just moved into our house in Cypress that we lived in till the day I married.  Soo many of my childhood memories are tied up into that house.  I was the second oldest of 6 children, and my days were spent going to a new school I LOVED and playing outside when I got home.  It was a happy time.

6.  Insert your own random thought here.....My 16 year old grand daughter came over after school yesterday and we spent a couple of hours catching up and then went out to dinner together and sat and talked a couple more.  How I LOVE this time with her.  She opens her heart to me and shares her world and how grateful I am that she feels free to do so.  Lots of what we discuss could be dismissed as "high school drama" but in her eyes is as important as it comes.  I get my opinions across and my advice and hints and she seems to hang on every word I say.  Which personally I think shows maturity beyond her years that at 16 she is smart enough to know with age often comes wisdom.  (wink) But maybe it's because she KNOWS how much her grandma loves her and that I want only her what's best for her, and so she trusts me.  Whatever the reason, I am grateful.

Hope you all are having a good week.  Hope I am not too far behind for most of you doing this...Blessings to you all!

  2. Two things I absolutely loved while reading here today. First that story about the day with your mom. What a treasure that is to look back on and hold in your heart. My mom turns 87 this summer, and I know I am so fortunate to have her in my life and in good health. Secondly, the random thought about your granddaughter was also special. Yes, it might seem like drama and nonsense, but when you're sixteen that is life and what's important to you and how you form impressions of others and make decisions about who you want to be. So encouraging she loves to talk with you and share things. Happy Mother's Day!

  3. Wonderful answers, Debbie. I could picture the shopping trip so well from your description. So glad you had that day with your mom that would have not happened had you not gone to the time and effort.

What a blessing the time with your granddaughter must be to both of you! That is so wonderful that you have a relationship like this.

  4. Debbie, all your answers are good, but I love the precious memory with your mom in the store and the fun you had together. But the time you had with your granddaughter as she confided in you and hears your wisdom, that is so special. That is something to treasure and what a blessing for her to feel that she can share anything. I wonder how different life would be for young girls to have close relationships with godly parents and grandparents such as you to speak wisdom into their lives. You are such a blessing.

  6. What a wonderful memory you shared about your trip to Target with your mom! I also enjoyed your random thought about the time you spent with your granddaughter. Both, precious memories, for sure.
How blessed you are to have so many "teachers" in your family. One of our sons preaches and teaches, as well.

  7. Oh my goodness. That story about your mom has me grinning from ear to ear!! I am sure that there are many times that you have thought of that day and were glad that you made the effort. That is a lesson to all of us. What a happy memory to have in your memory bank!

I also love that your 16-year-old granddaughter shares her heart with you! Again, you have chosen to invest the time in your people, and you reap the rewards of relationship.

    Happy Mother's Day to you!!

  8. Oh the story of you and your mom's adventures in Target had me chuckling. It's wonderful to have those happy memories of laughter and fun. Good times you and your granddaughter are having, which I know for a sad fact is a rare thing for other grandmothers and granddaughters.

  9. It seems that your story about you and your mother's outing brought joy to all of us. My mother also had a great sense of humor and had some interesting experiences on one of the "go-mobile" carts. We treasure these times don't we. And your precious granddaughter will also treasure the times spent with you. It is such a privilege to pray for and try to pass on the spiritual legacy that has been left to us. Have a wonderful Mother's Day.

  10. It is wonderful when you can have that kind of companionship and input with your granddaughter. She will cherish those conversations as the years go on. I love the memories of your mom. I don't think any of us wish we'd spent less time with our moms. One more day, one more visit, one more walk around the garden...
Have a wonderful Mother's Day, Debbie. xo

  11. What a great story about you & your mom's shopping spree...LOL! That one is truly one to look back on and smile. You have a lovely granddaughter. My oldest grand is 18 and will be graduating in a few weeks. His brother is 16 and they both enjoy hangin' out with us "old folks" too! Soon they will be out on their own so we must enjoy these moments while we can. Happy Mother's Day, Debbie :)
