ANOTHER CHANGE, AND A PEEK AT THE NEW QUILT

It's around noon on Thursday and another week has squealed by.  It is almost downright scary how fast the time goes.  I have had a pretty busy week working on "my" quilt!  I am not only excited about making one for myself, let me just say it has a whole different feel mentally to making it too.  I am not nearly as concerned that every little thing be perfect, and not worrying about rather or not someone else will actually like it and it won't end up in a closet or drawer somewhere is a good feeling as well, lol.  I am in no hurry with NO deadline, and that has also added to the positive experience.  And let's not forget I am sitting in my comfy new chair, quickly wheeling around to where I need to be.  All in all...a good week of sewing.  I did make my changes however.  Let me tell you (the LONG version..sorry) of what I did.  In our bedroom when we moved in we had traded bedroom furniture with Mike and Mel.   We bought really nice bedroom furniture for Melody when she started college with the idea that it would be perfect to take with her when she got married.  She did just that.  But when we moved in here our bedroom was WAY WAY smaller then what we had in the past, and the GIANT king sized bedroom set that hubby and I had was just not going to work. So we traded. Mike and Mel could easily accommodate the bigger furniture pieces, and they were both pretty sets.  Everyone was happy.  However! when we originally bought the set for Melody, we purchased both a triple dresser with 12 drawers, AND a large chest of drawers with 7 more.  And it also had a nightstand with two more BIG drawers.  Hubby and I have NO need for that many drawers, even though there are two of us.  Mel filled it easily however, lol.  I don't wear scarves, gloves, belts, hats, just to name a few of the things Melody has lots of.  Anyway....the point of all of this background?  The chest of drawers in our room was basically sporting 3 completely empty drawers, and the 4 others could EASILY be accommodated by the big dresser.  So that got me to thinking.  I could just start putting sewing articles in that dresser (like the one left behind by mom in the other bedroom) but then all I would have is ANOTHER place to look for what I want/need.  Sooo I decided to bring the chest of drawers to the sewing area (after moving the other stuff in there to the big dresser) and emptied out the bookcase and put it where the chest had been.  We drug all the books back out of the closet and I took a few hours and filled the drawers up with I use most and filled the rolling plastic drawers up with not as much used things, and wheeled it back into the closet in the extra bedroom.  Soo there you have it.  Truthfully?  while it looks "NICE" it kind of looks and feels like a dresser chest in the sewing/everyday eating/family room area, lol.  But I am going to pretend I don't know any better and just move along.  It serves my needs, was NOT being used to it's fullest capacity anyway, and is clean and neat looking.  I also know that if this had been put in an actual sewing "room", INSTEAD of a sewing "area", I wouldn't even be thinking twice.  Let me show you my changes....Oh, and also some of the quilt I am working on.  I need 80 7 and half inch hour glass blocks, and I have about 50 some done.  Oh, and Kathy, I am thinking these are just regular hour glass blocks, not double, lol.  I said that I guess because I am using two different background fabrics, and technically it LOOKS like two in every block.  It's interesting too btw, that these are also done with 1/2 square triangles which I promised myself I wasn't going to do again, and yet, with the square up ruler (and maybe because they are bigger) they are super easy...or maybe they are just FINALLY getting easier for me....or maybe it's because I am not being picky....or maybe it's because all the points meet in the center, lol.  Whatever it is, this is quick, easy and simple.  Just what I am in the mood for.

IT TAKES UP ABOUT AS MUCH ROOM AS THE BOOKCASE AND THE ROLLING DRAWERS, THOUGH IT IS QUITE A BIT DEEPER.  THIS WAY THE FABRIC IS NOT EXPOSED TO THE SUNLIGHT EVER EITHER.

ANOTHER VIEW

THE BOOKCASES NEW SPOT.  THIS PARTICULAR BOOKCASE IS ONE OF THE ONLY THINGS THAT HAS SURVIVED EVERY MOVE WE HAVE EVER MADE AND HAS BEEN WITH US FOR OVER 35 YEARS.  CAN'T EVER BEAR TO LEAVE IT BEHIND,.

ANOTHER VIEW...IT IS FULL OF ALL OF MY FAVORITE CHRISTIAN NOVELS.  AND YES, BELIEVE IT OR NOT I DO RE-READ SOME OF THEM AT TIMES. I HAVE TO RE-READ A WHOLE BOOK SOMETIMES BEFORE I REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENS, LOL.  I HAVE GIVEN MANY AWAY OVER THE YEARS AND I RARELY KEEP ANY OF THEM ANYMORE, SIMPLY PASSING THEM ON TO OTHERS AS I HAVE NO ROOM FOR THEM NOW   BUT THESE ARE MY FAVORITES.

ONE OF THE BLOCKS.  I HAVE TWO BACK GROUND FABRICS (THE LIGHTER ONE) AND SEVERAL DIFFERENT COLORS OF NAVY, BURGUNDY, OLIVE GREEN, AND PURPLES.

ANOTHER

ANOTHER...THIS ONE HAS THE OTHER BACKGROUND.  THERE WILL BE 40 OF EACH BACKGROUND

THIS IS NOT HOW IT IS GOING TO BE...I JUST LAYED THEM OUT SO YOU CAN GET THE IDEA.  I AM NOT TOTALLY CERTAIN HOW I AM GOING TO LAY THEM OUT YET.  THIS IS JUST ONE OF THE OPTIONS.  I INTEND TO HAVE A 1 INCH BORDER FRAMING IT AND THEN A 3 INCH BORDER AS WELL.  I WANT IT TO BE REALLY BIG AS I INTEND TO USE IT AS A WARM BLANKET FOR SNUGGLING ON THE COUCH WHILE WATCHING TV IN THE WINTERTIME.  MY FAMILY ROOM (THE WHOLE HOUSE REALLY) IS MADE UP OF NAVY, BURGUNDY, OLIVE GREEN, AND GOLD, SO YOU CAN SEE WHY IT IS PERFECT FOR US.
Well, guess that's about it for now.  I have had about an hour break, and I want to see if I can't finish up all the blocks by tomorrow night.  I honestly never drempt I'd get this much done while waiting for the other fabric to arrive.  I am glad I had it all ready to work on.  Saturday would have been mom's 82nd birthday, and us girls are going to get together for lunch to celebrate it.  More on that later.  Enjoy the rest of your week, and this week-end!  Blessings to you all!  Debbie

  1. Hi sweet friend, I love the bureau in your sewing room-looks very nice.
Your blocks are amazing and you've done them perfectly. I am anxious to get back to hand quilting my Alaska quilt, then I have another "autumn" quilt to begin. That bookcase is so beautiful-I can see why you've kept it.
Hope you have a good evening.
    Hugs,
    Noreen

  2. That chest of drawers looks perfect in your sewing area! I wouldn't fret about it at all ... besides, like you said, if you had a dedicated sewing room, you wouldn't think twice about it. ;-)

I just love, love, love your quilt ... sweet pattern and gorgeous fabrics (civil war fabrics are my favorite!). That will be such a rich, cozy looking quilt when it's done ... and your work looks impeccable. Good for you to make one for yourself! I quilted for about 27-28 years before I made one that I kept for us.

  4. Those fabrics in your quilt are wonderful. It's going to be such a pretty one. I like the adjustments you've already made to your sewing area. Anything goes with furniture in any room these days and it looks terrific and adds some height for a visual pop. Have fun with the remainder of those blocks!

  7. Do you know I have that same dresser still? It is in one of the boys rooms. It came from the set that my Mom bought for me when I still lived at home. It looks fantastic in your sewing area. I need to see if the boys use it and bring it down stairs. I don't think they do.
It looks lovely. I like your bookcase too filled with the books you love.
Your quilt is going to be amazing. I always am so much more relaxed when I am sewing for myself.
I do hope you have a lovely weekend. It is hot here again.
I am getting the urge to quilt.
Your hour glass blocks are the best.

  8. Debbie, I have so much to say! First, the sewing space you have created has turned out so nice! It is roomy, and organized, with everything you need at your fingertips. Especially now with your new dresser for more storage! It looks great. Didn't I tell you that chair would make all the difference in the world!
Okay, now your blocks....looking terrific, with perfectly matching points!! You, my friend are a quilter! I love the fabrics you are using too. Such nice rich colors!!! And I know what you mean, when you are working on something that is for you, rather than someone else....a whole different relaxed feeling while making it!
Go celebrate your beautiful Mom's live with your sisters. Laugh, tell stories, and enjoy! We just did that very thing last week for Nana!
    Hugs,
    Kris
