THE FINISHED BABY QUILT

Well  I have had another such relaxing, S L O W week that I could "almost" feel guilty, haha. Seriously though it has been really nice.  The weather has been almost perfect as well.  Nice, warm, with cool gentle breezes blowing.  We are suppose to get a little rain this week-end and I am really hoping it happens as California is sooo parched and desperate for moisture.  I have taken my time and S L O W L Y pieced together the quilt top for the baby.  I experimented around with a couple of different looks, and at one point was using maybe 5 different shades of mint, which is the main color she wants in the nursery. I made some pinwheels, and some hour glasses, and some plain blocks and some with sashing and some without, and with cornerstones and without cornerstones, before we finally settled on just two different shades of mint, with plain mint sashing and coral cornerstones. She is pulling in splashes of coral in the nursery but doesn't want too much. Pale grey and off white are the neutral colors used.   We had soo much fun designing this.  It's a very simple quilt and not that large.  About 44 by 44.  So let me show you....

I STARTED WITH  EIGHT BY EIGHT BLOCKS AND THEY FINISHED AT 7 BY 7 BY THE TIME I HAD MADE THE HOUR GLASSES AND SQUARED THEM UP...CAN'T SEE THE FABRICS VERY WELL IN THESE PHOTOS BUT WHAT APPEARS TO BE WHITE IS ACTUALLY WHITE WITH TINY LIGHT GREY FLOWERS.  AND THEN THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT PRINTED MINT FABRICS.  TWO OF THE BLOCKS WERE JUST ONE FABRIC COLOR, AND THE OTHER BLOCK WAS A MIXTURE OF THE TWO FABRICS, BASICALLY GIVING ME 3 DIFFERENT BLOCKS TO WORK WITH

I CROPPED THE PICTURE AND MANAGED TO GET CLOSE ENOUGH YOU CAN SEE THE FABRICS BETTER.  I FLIPPED THEM AROUND SO IT WENT A SOLID COLOR AND THEN A MIXED AND THEN ALSO SO THE LIGHT GREY AND WHITE WAS ALWAYS NEXT TO A COLOR

JUST ANOTHER ANGLE

HERE IT IS UP AGAINST THE BANNER THAT WILL HANG SOMEWHERE IN THE NURSERY, AND THE SCRIPTURE PICTURE I MADE.  THE BACKGROUND OF THE SCRIPTURE PICTURE IS THE SAME GREY AND WHITE ONE IN THE QUILT.  IT ALL REALLY MATCHES WELL I THINK

AND THEN SHE BROUGHT HOME ONE OF THE CENTERPIECES FROM THE SHOWER AND WILL USE THIS SOMEWHERE IN THE ROOM TOO.  AGAIN, SUCH A GOOD MATCH!

Anything that was breakable she received at the sprinkle she left with me and I will bring when we come when the baby is born.  They are busy painting the nursery and moving things around in preparation.  Luke is going to join Sam in his bedroom in a big boy bed eventually, but probably not until the baby is ready to leave Mel's room once she is sleeping the night at around 3 months or so. So several more months for Luke to grow and mature.   Meanwhile Sam is beside himself with excitement over Luke sleeping in his room.  Told his mama, "We don't need to wait for Luke's new bed....he can just sleep in mine with me.  There's lots of room."  haha  I have a feeling it will be a L O N G wait for little Sam.  And probably more then one "play session" to break up once they are finally together when Luke moves into the big bed from the crib when they are put to bed at night. But they are soo cute together, and are really starting to play together more and more as Luke has gotten older.  Sam especially is such a social little guy.  Very outgoing and friendly and constantly wants to be around kids.  He is very much like his parents is the truth of it, and I guess Lukey is proving to be just the same.  They have somewhat settled on a name.  Well, let me rephrase that, lol.  They have decided it will either be Claire Juliet, or Juliet Claire. I love them both!  But she thinks she might have to wait for a look at her to decided who she will be.  I had the HARDEST time of all naming Melody.  We honestly just couldn't settle in.  The boys were easy.  But not Mel.  I had leaned very heavily towards Summer most of the pregnancy.  She was to be born in the middle of summertime and it just seemed perfect.  But for some reason I felt a "Summer" had to be a blonde, and when she was born her head was covered in dark brown hair.  Of course a month later it all fell out and she's been super blonde every since, lol.  Then I wanted to name her Melanie, or Melissa or maybe even Mandy.  But on the 4th day after she was born and we were ready to go home, we had to fill in the birth certificate before we could leave, when it suddenly occurred to me.  She was a Melody!  She would be the music in our lives that we'd been wanting and missing, and so she was Melody Joy. Might sound kind of corny, but honestly that was my thought process, lol.  Oh, and btw, NEVER did it occur to me that everyone would call her Mel.  lol  Soooo all this to say I do get how they can't seem to settle on a name for her....been there and done that.

I am bringing the quilt to the gal who has done my quilting for me and I am anxious to get it back so I can see it finished up.  The backing will be a creamy off white Minky, and the binding is a soft coral and white print.  She said it should take about a week. Meanwhile it's onto the bed skirt.  We are going with the same mint as the sashing in the quilt, with a solid 2 inch stripe of coral at the bottom. It has two pleats.  I made this same pattern for Jessie, and it is an easy one.  Then a couple, or maybe 3, crib sheets and that part will be all done. The sheets are the easiest of all.  Take maybe a half hour to whip together.  Then I am going to "play" some more.  A pillow and some stuffed animals will be made out of all the left over fabric and scraps, and what I really want to try my hand at is a rag doll. But we will see, lol.  I've still got plenty of time God willing.  I do have a gift or two to make in March as well, so I am sure I will be plenty busy.  I never stop being grateful that the Lord has seen fit to bless me with this season in my life.  Where I am free to create at my machine for hours at a time if I want to, and nap if it so strikes me, and have lunch with a long time girl friend, which is what I did yesterday, and spend time with my grandbabies, and read a book, chat on the phone with my sisters, and just generally live a life that brings me such simple joy.  We all know how quickly things can change and who knows how long this might be the case.  But for now I intend to take full advantage of it, and hopefully bless others along the way with what I can make.  Hope you all enjoy your week-ends.  MANY blessings to you all!  Debbie

  4. The quilt is beautiful and I love the color scheme for the nursery. Such fresh colors!
When we were expecting our youngest (Bekah), we had three girls' names and three boys' names selected, but my husband did not want to decide until after we met the baby. "She looks like a Rebekah," he said immediately. Choosing names can be hard decisions! :)

  9. Debbie, the quilt is just beautiful. You are a blessing indeed to your family and others with the lovely things you make and the joy you show. Funny isn't it how the beautiful name Melody became Mel. That happens so often. :-)
